UPC School presents the new edition of the Master Teknon in Medical-Surgical Laser. Medical Photonics. 3rd edition.
The course comes in response to the need for a structured and formal training in medical applications of innovative lighting systems. The medical user with basic knowledge about a complex technology that requires integration of physical and medical concepts, is led to the use of elaborate systems of an automatic, often limited to instructions or manuals that you received from the manufacturers of these equipment.
The course has the support of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the Medical Center and the Foundation Teknon Teknon. As a result, has agreed on a program capable of bringing together the two components of Photomedicine, the technician and the doctor, assembling the necessary infrastructure to ensure optimal training of the professional group interested in this discipline.
The Masters starts on 21 February 2009 and the total length is 450 hours. The place of performance will be at the ICFO (Institute of Photonic Sciences) and Teknon Medical Center.

This Christmas season is a joint initiative of Novovisión already consolidated and socio attracting much interest
· Is the fourth year being held this year
· Both preoperative testing and subsequent follow-up is also free
· Is guaranteed confidentiality of data on applicants
· There will be a total of 20 interventions in Madrid and 10 in Murcia
As in recent years by this time, Novovisión performed a solidarity campaign to finally solve vision problems for patients who, for economic reasons, are unable to access the services of a first class eye clinic.
For this, the team conducted twenty Novovisión interventions for free and disinterested residents of the Community of Madrid (in addition to a dozen people interventions in the Murcia region) showing the inability to pay. This included appropriate preoperative testing and subsequent revisions. Specifically, we offer refractive surgery solutions (for cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) in the area of Ophthalmology.
Convinced that better health is better quality of life in Novovisión we extend this possibility to those who can not access it, said Ramon Gutierrez, Director. As he says, we know that to reach stakeholders, we need the media, hence we seek your cooperation, as well those in need can access the benefits of this campaign.
Requirements and Selection Process
Among the requirements that are demanded to solicit support for refractive surgery, candidates must:
- Present at the Clinic (Paseo de la Castellana 54 Madrid C / Jaime I, 2 in Murcia) documentation to support the financial hardship to meet the costs of these services (income statement of the family unit)
- Photocopy of DNI
- Have more than 25 years.
- Living in the Community of Madrid or the Community of Murcia.
- Need some intervention that is not covered by Social Security benefits.
A committee composed of medical and administrative management of Novovisión evaluate the information submitted by applicants, with priority given to the degree of need for the services offered by this clinic and financial constraints of stakeholders.
Applicants must submit documentation of their situation between December 29 and January 10 at the Paseo de la Castellana 54 and at 10.00 hours Monday to Friday 16.00h. It is envisaged that the preoperative tests were conducted in mid-January, taking out the involvement of all selected by the end of that month or early February, in that day, Novovisión open its doors to the press from the 11 in the morning and throughout the day.
In any case interventions will be exchanged for its monetary value or any other type of consideration. It guarantees the confidentiality of all information provided by applicants.

The combination of lapatinib (Tyverb ®) and letrozole (an aromatase inhibitor) as first-line treatment delays the progression of metastatic breast cancer HER2 positive compared with letrozole alone [i], according to a study presented at the 31 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS).
Lapatinib (Tyverb ®) is available in Spain this month for breast cancer patients with advanced or metastatic ErbB2 + whose tumor has progressed following prior treatment with anthracyclines, taxanes and trastuzumab [ii] for metastatic disease and for which so far there was no other treatment alternative. This drug, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is administered to these patients in combination with capecitabine.
The study presented in SABCS EGF30008 is a phase III clinical esnsayo, double-blind, randomized, placebo that enrolled 1286 postmenopausal women with metastatic breast cancer with hormone receptor positive. Some of the patients included in this study expresses the ErbB2 receptor. The study patients received either letrozole 2.5 mg once daily plus 1500 mg of lapatinib, or 2.5 mg of letrozole plus placebo. The first objective was to test the disease-free survival in the subpopulation was also overexpressed the ErbB2 receptor and, as secondary endpoints of progression-free survival in the group of patients. Other secondary endpoints were overall response rate, clinical benefit rate, time to response, duration of it, overall survival, safety and quality of life. Hormone therapy was permitted only in the group receiving adjuvant treatment (1 year before study entry).
The patients experienced 5.2 months of increased survival free of disease progression compared with women treated with letrozole alone (8.2 months vs. 3). Across the group receiving lapatinib with letrozole treatment, irrespective of whether the receptor ErbB2 was overexpressed or not, the median progression-free survival was more than a month with letrozole alone (11.9 months versus 10.9).
The combination of letrozole and lapatinib was safe and no serious adverse effects were identified. Adverse effects of grade 3 / 4 occurred in 2% of patients in both the group receiving the combination as monotherapy and included diarrhea, back pain, fatigue and increased transaminases (ALT and AST).
The growth factor receptors, such as those belonging to the ErbB family, play a key role in growth and cell survival [iii]. The power to talk to these protein receptors is a way to kill tumor cells and tumor growth tackle. About 70% of breast cancers are hormone receptor positive and only one third of them respond to treatment with aromatase inhibitors. Even many of the responsive tumors may become resistant, leading to tumor progression and, ultimately, a fatal outcome [iv]. Recent studies have revealed interactions between hormone receptors and ErbB receptors as major contributors to the development of resistance, and have served as the basic hypothesis for this study [v].
ErbB2 + breast cancer
The HER2 + breast cancer strikes nearly half (44% -48%) of patients younger than 40 years and one quarter of all breast cancer patients [vi] [vii]. It is one of the most aggressive, poor prognosis and therefore at higher risk of recurrence and mortality. About half of patients with metastatic breast cancer ErbB2 + unresponsive to existing therapies so far and the most responsive patients show progression of the disease in the year following the tratamiento4, 5. So far, there were no other therapeutic alternatives for these patients.
Unlike other treatments for this cancer, lapatinb is the first orally administered targeted therapy, allowing patients to take treatment at home. Lapatinib has a novel mechanism of action: it acts from inside the cell, inhibiting both the ErbB1 and ErbB2 receptor, both of growth and proliferation tumoral6, 7. Being able to act from inside the cell, Tykerb will not be affected by any amendments or by the presence of mutations in the extracellular domain of receptor8.

This year's cold and freezing temperatures have arrived in advance. When the Mercury fall, the snow makes its first appearance, and then when given the go-ahead to winter sports, is a key sports such as skiing.
There are many modalities practiced but the most popular and suitable for all ages include downhill skiing and snowboarding. The Society of Sports Traumatology (SETRADE) ensures that each of these activities requires a physically demanding and involves a very different injury risks.
Needless to say that when the ski season begins, there are many fans who are thrown without much thought to the tracks, without fulfilling the conditions suitable for this sport safely.
For SETRADE, one of the most basic measures to prevent injuries is standard practice throughout the year for some kind of physical activity that serves to strengthen and maintain lists the most vulnerable when skiing (legs, arms and spine).
Note that downhill skiing is the most practiced in the resorts, although it requires a good physical condition and technique. Given that an estimated 200 million people around the world practice this sport, the chance of injury is 2.6 to 3.9 injuries per 1,000 skiers per day. This high rate of injuries means that skiing is one of the sports with a higher risk lesion. Many of the injuries in skiing are produced as a result of lack of fitness of the athlete. Because it is a seasonal sport not practiced all year, the risk of traumatic injury is greater than in other sports activities. Skiing fitness and requires specific training that few fans often make, says Dr. Sanchez Marchori, president of the Society of Sports Traumatology.
To prevent these injuries, the Society of Sports Traumatology (SETRADE) recommended before putting on skis:
- Good physical preparation throughout the year, playing some kind of activity, particularly where they are involved joints, spine, limbs
- Prior technical training to acquire a good command should take lessons with a specialized monitor.
- Availability of appropriate ski equipment in good condition, with well-controlled bindings and goggles with glass screen UVA rays to prevent eye damage and use sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
- A pre-session warm ski including joint flexibility exercises. The intensity of physical exertion during the skiing will be progressive while the joints are heated in the first downs.
- Ski slopes of the evolution of the other skiers to avoid collision.
- Allow physical activity to see the first signs of tiredness.
- Get enough rest. In case of injury later in the day, may be due to fatigue or by lack of sleep or excessive physical activity.
Furthermore, note that the most common injuries suffered by skiers are often the vertebral column, although the percentage of a serious injury is very low. The upper extremities are also affected in falls, although the snowboarders suffered three times more than skiers.
